Downloading Apps with Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge may flag downloads from smaller developers as potentially unsafe. This guide shows you how to keep the downloaded file and run the installer.

Step 1: Keeping the Download

When Edge blocks a download, it refuses to save the download and displays a warning to the user. To keep the download you must go through a number of steps. First click the download arrow button in the toolbar to show the latest downloads. For the downloaded installer you will see a warning about trusting the download with a trash can and a "..." icon. Click the "..." to reveal another mene. This is the key point, click the "Keep" menu item to save the download in your Downloads folder.

Click Keep on the download

Edge will continue to try to prevent you from saving the download by displaying another warning. It appears to only have a Cancel and Delete button but this is not actually the case. There is a downward arrow on the Delete button. Click this arrow (not the Delete text) and you will see a new option appear. Click "Keep anyway" to save the file to your computer.

Click Keep anyway to confirm

Step 2: Running the Installer

Now open your Downloads folder where you will find the downloaded installer. When you double-click to run the downloaded installer, Windows Defender SmartScreen may block it. Click the "More info" link to reveal the option to proceed.

Click More info on SmartScreen warning

Now a new button will appear. Click this new "Run anyway" button to launch the installer.

Click Run anyway to launch the installer

After these steps the application will install normally. These warnings appear because the software is new or from a smaller publisher — they do not indicate a security problem.
